Now that some of the dust has settled in at least a few other parts of my quest, I thought I'd post a brief review of WebVisions 2009. This is an exciting time to be alive and connected to the Internet, and WebVisions typified that excitement for me.

Open Source Bridge Sessions About Performance

As you probably know, I am attending Open Source Bridge. As a performance engineer and capacity planner, I'd like to highlight some of the performance-related sessions.

As you may have heard, there was an incident in the Ruby on Rails ecosystem recently that drew attention from a number of Portlanders, including myself. Well, a few leaders stepped up to the plate and have formed Railsbridge.

Sage: Open Source Mathematics Software

Yesterday at Barcamp Portland, I mentioned in passing that there was a comprehensive open source mathematics package called Sage. I had a few people ask me for the link, but I think it deserves a bit more than just a link. But first, here's the link:

Sage is a collection of open source math packages, with a Python scripting framework, a notebook interface that can mix graphics and calculations, and even a web interface. Sage includes such major open source packages as R, Maxima, and the Gnu Scientific Library.
